Desert Cottages has adopted the pioneering Hogewey model of care, originally designed in the Netherlands, offering a smaller setting uniquely designed to help memory impaired individuals flourish. Each Cottage accommodates no more than 6 residents, with a high level of staff oversight, ensuring a supportive environment for each resident with the right amount of stimulus tailored to their cognitive abilities. Our small group setting allows for individualized attention and engagement, promoting social interaction and cognitive stimulation. Through our innovative approach, Desert Cottages focuses on whole person-centered care for those living with Dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Memory/Dementia Care Program

Desert Cottages has created an environment that allows us to care for not just our memory impaired residents, but with special consideration for individuals that suffer from dementia as well as residents that suffer from behavioral issues such as combativeness and aggressiveness. Our homes are designed with the security features necessary for a safe and secure environment along with interior design features that incorporate soft tones and provide a calming environment. The family room hosts a specially-designed focal point wall, which provides added mental stimulation and serves as the primary location for all of our social activities. For our residents that prefer a little quiet time, we offer a secluded retreat area.

Our Dementia Care Program at Desert Cottages includes:

• Closed living area with single and double rooms lovingly furnished.
• Individual furnishings of personal rooms for a familiar feeling.
• Handicap accessible bathrooms and toilets.
• Access to continuous and confidential care by our trained staff.
• Inclusion of family members according to personal needs and wishes.
• Friendly day rooms for social activities.
• Generous walks and a garden just for our dementia patients to accommodate their increased drive to move about.

Interactive Therapy & Engagement for Dementia Care

At Desert Cottages, we are dedicated to enhancing the well-being of our residents through innovative, engaging experiences. Our interactive sensory table will be an integral part of our daily activities, providing an interactive and stimulating environment for individuals with dementia. This motion-activated technology will be used in group and one-on-one sessions, encouraging cognitive engagement, physical movement, and social interaction. Our caregivers will incorporate our interactive sensory table activities into our recreational programs, offering residents joyful moments while helping to reduce anxiety, restlessness and behaviors. Whether sparking memories, promoting gentle exercise, or simply bringing smiles, our interactive sensory table will enrich the lives of our residents by fostering meaningful connections and a sense of accomplishment.

Pet Therapy

Desert Cottages uses Pet Therapy to ensure that the social needs of our residents are met, specifically addressing loneliness, boredom, and helplessness, or the “three plagues of long-term care.”

Even though our residents interact with the same group of people day in and day out, those people may remain strangers due to the resident’s dementia. Pets make great companions, who give love and affection freely to all residents, including those residents who are withdrawn or isolated.

One of the reasons that pets have been incorporated into the Desert Cottages care plan is that they help to alleviate resident restlessness and boredom. Spontaneous opportunities for interaction with pets can keep residents entertained during “free times.”

Respite Care

At Desert Cottages, we understand the challenges families face when caring for a loved one. Our Respite Care Program is designed to offer temporary living arrangements for individuals in need of care, providing families with much-needed support and peace of mind. Permanent relocation is not always necessary when your loved one requires care and help.

Respite care offers short-term relief for caregivers by providing temporary living arrangements for their loved ones who require care and assistance. With Respite Care, we can ease a family member’s burden of care by offering temporary living arrangements for their loved one. This enables individuals needing care to continue living in a comfortable, home environment, while providing their family members with a break from the demands of their daily care.
